I had the lovely honour of being asked by Natalie Wright to review her debut novel Emily's House. Click here for the review.
Afterwards we got to talking and decided to do a Q&A session and GIVEAWAY of her novel! Here is the lovely Q&A we had and the giveaway is listed below.
To start things off can you tell the readers a little about yourself?
Since Emily's House was published in November, I spend more and more time during the day hanging out on social media, blogging, and doing interviews. I love it!
I live in the high desert of Tucson, Arizona with my husband, nine-year-old daughter and my dog Molly. I love to travel and will be going to the Bahamas this summer on a cruise - my first cruise - so exciting! I'm planning to go to France next summer for the first time. Travel provides a great adventures that ignite my imagination.
When not engaged with the stuff I said above, I enjoy reading (almost all genres), gaming and walking in the desert. Oh, and I've become addicted to The Voice on Monday nights. Cee Lo Green - LOVE him!
A LOT! Emily's House involves not only Celtic mythology and wisdom (which I knew nothing about before I started the project), but there are also science fiction elements. I didn't know anything about physics either! I read many books and articles, trying to understand the physics behind the possibility of time travel and the Hadron Super Collider. Once I understood how virtually impossible it is to do what I wanted my character to do from a scientific standpoint, I punted and made it up! The beauty of fiction.
How much research did you do for this novel?
I also read quite a few books about different spiritual teachings from both East and West.
A vision. I was going to hypnosis to help with losing the baby weight after my daughter was born (it didn't help!), but at the end of my last session I had a vision of a gold band hovering over rolling green hills. This vision stayed with me and I had to find out what it meant. I researched on the internet for a long time and one night I came across a photo of a gold torc, a piece of Celtic jewelry worn around the neck or upper arm and made of many strands of twisted metal. It was a eureka moment when I saw that photo - it was what I had seen in my vision. So I kept going with the Celtic research, finding out about the Goddess Brighid and sacred wells of Ireland. And soon a story started to form in my head - the story that became Emily's House.
Emily is not based off of anyone I know and she's not my alter ego or anything, but I do relate to her. Emily just wants to belong and be accepted. I think it's something that a lot of people can relate to, especially in the teen and young adult years.
What inspired you to write this novel?
Is the character of Emily anything like yourself or based off of anyone you know?
Emily's desire to fit in is even more of a factor in Book 2, Emily's Trial and this drive to belong will test her friendships.
That's a hard one! But if it was cast right now, I think that Abigail Breslin (from Signs and Little Miss Sunshine) would be the best match to what I had in mind when writing. And I think she could pull off Emily's attitude and do the fight scenes too.
I've got a lot going on! I'm currently working on edits to H.A.L.F., the first book in a new Science Fiction series. H.A.L.F. is a fast-paced, character driven science fiction novel set in the desert environment of my home state, Arizona. What happens when a teenage girl tries to free a human-alien hybrid from the secret government lab that has been the hybrid's only home? You'll have to read H.A.L.F. to find out! Readers can check out the Prologue on my blog. [HERE'S THE LINK: http://nataliewrightsya.blogspot.com/p/someplace-else-aka-cowboys-aliens.html ]
If you could cast someone to play Emily who would it be?
I got great feedback on H.A.L.F. from my beta readers and they all commented that it was unlike anything they had read before. I'm excited to get this one to readers!
I'm also editing Emily's Trial, Book 2 in the Akasha Chronicles. In Emily's Trial, Emily will navigate her first love and struggle with difficulties in her relationships with her best friends, Fanny and Jake, all while facing an antagonist that makes Doughal from Book 1 look like a nice guy!
And I'm also working on a companion novella to the Akasha Chronicles that will go into more of the backstory of Saorla from Emily's House.
Thank you Natalie!
